PAKET 4.0 BULLETIN NO 4 22nd January, 1991
To all PAKET users:
Using PAKET with the TNC's Mailbox (or PMS)
Most TNCs access the PMS facility at the command level, but some may
provide the access by reserving a particular Stream (or Channel) for
terminal access to the PMS. For example Stream K may be the Stream
identified by the TNC for your Mailbox and when a message is entered
into the Mailbox you can change to that Stream to read the mail.
The Mailbox channel can/should be configured to use one of PAKET's
Communications Windows - any window will do. Using the online
Configuration (Alt-Z), select option 3 to configure the Communications
Windows and set your TNC's PMS Stream (eg. "K") as the Stream ID for
the desired Communications Window.
If you have configured the Telephone option on in your main
Communications window, PAKET will issue the "Call Waiting" beep-beep
sounds when there is some activity in another window, although this
reminder is not really required for the Mailbox.
To avoid the "Call Waiting" reminder, you should turn off the
"Telephone" option in your main Communications Window, eg Window 1.
Unfortunately, in the current implementation, this defeats the elegant
alarm as well!
You should configure the PMS Communications Window to "Process Data
without Viewing" which means the data will flow into that window (and
to the Log file if you wish) and cannot choke PAKET's other buffers.
The messages will be stored in the TNC's Mailbox of course, so it
hardly seems necessary to configure a Flashback buffer for that window.
You could save some memory by configuring both the Input and Flashback
buffers to 0 for the Mailbox window.
Problems accessing Stream K in some TNCs.
It appears that the latest versions (1.1.7 et al) of the "TNC" series
firmware (TNC-2, -200, -220, -320, Tiny etc) use stream "K" for the
PMS. A stream "K" shows up on the CStatus and you might see "Connect"
and "Disconnect" messages for stream "K". However, the new firmware
disallows access to (and control of) that stream as was most useful in
the earlier versions.
So if you are using one of these faulty firmware versions, it has been
found best not to allocate a Communications Window to your PMS because
the TNC will not allow PAKET (or you for that matter) to select stream
"K"!
You can read your mail using the TNC's PMS commands, and PAKET will
display the "phantom" messages in the last allocated Communications
window.
